Technically, I began my reef venture in 1995, in San Antonio, Texas. I got a great deal on a 300 gallon tank previously set up for saltwater and it came with T12 lighting, 2 penguin 400 bio wheels and a canister filter... oh and a custom 5' tall protein skimmer... If you have been around a while you might remember these! It also had tons of crushed coral, a GIANT 130 lb rock in the center with tons of holes and caves in it and a 10" purple tang. Long story short , I also received tons of not so good advice and lost much... 1 year later the tank would be history.

In 2005 We moved to Florida and my neighbor was selling a 100g hexagon in need of a good cleaning up and a canopy for dirt cheap... yep it was calling my name! It was the kind meant to be viewed from all sides so the overflow was dead center. After a year of dealing with the woes of cleaning such a deep tank and lighting issues due to canopy size and depth and much complaining , My husband, being a nice guy, bought me a used (sight unseen) tank and surprised me with it. Remember, he meant well and I will begin my build here. LMAO

My 150g Nightmare!!!

One nice summer day a pickup rolls up to the house with a big filthy fish tank in back of it and nicely says it's a gift from my husband, where should he put it? Unprepared for this I tell him to put it out back on top of the picnic table. It was dirty and I needed to inspect and water test it. I was excited but some how had the feeling of dread wash over me like a flood. After inspection and the best cleaning, I had to reseal the whole thing. It was badly scratched and had hard water line stains 1/3 up from the bottom. No matter what I did it would not come off. But when water was in the tank it really wasn't too noticeable. One thing this tank did not possess was a center brace and I worried about that due to having this issue with the 300g in the past.... but thought, "well it's a smaller tank, it should be okay". I proceeded to build a stand (unconventionally too I might add....)

(folks pay attention, patience and good planning really counts!)

Before covering the frame I wanted to test it for weight. On top I sat the hex canopy just to see with at the time.

The stand was good and sturdy so it got closed up and I moved on to the canopy. Not realizing all the cool new lighting I went with what I knew... T12s.

Here it is finished...

If you look closely you will see a brace at the end. Yeah.... seams splitting within a few weeks. I KNEW I should have strapped the top frame and create a center brace for it like I did for the 300g!!!! People, listen to your gut. Long story short, 18 months later and repair after repair it just was no good! The bottom went out and it was over. My poor sea creatures lived in trash cans with the canopy straddled over them for 3 months. Then my wonderful kids pulled everyone together and got me a brand new tank for Christmas. Not knowing better they ordered a 125 because they forgot to measure the height but I'm happy... gotta love'em!
